Jose Mourinho explains why Tottenham quartet have been recalled for FA Cup replay vs Southampton

Jose Mourinho has explained the reasons behind his team selection for the FA Cup fourth-round replay against Southampton.

There are a number of changes to the team which beat Manchester City last time out.

Numerous players have been given the chance to stake a claim for a regular place in the side.

Mourinho has called upon Eric Dier, Tanguy Ndombele, Ryan Sessegnon and Jan Vertonghen for the match.

However, Erik Lamela and Giovanni Lo Celso miss out through injury.

The match has presented an opportunity for the aforementioned quartet to impress the Spurs head coach, with today's match being the last before the winter break.

Speaking ahead of the match, Mourinho discussed the changes he made and opened the door for each of the aforementioned players to catch the eye.

"It's a good opportunity for Dier, he's been working so hard to get back to the team with not many opportunities to play and Ndombele, let's see, finally a start after this difficult period," he told BT Sport.

"Sessegnon is a kid, I'm always happy to give him an opportunity to lay and develop, then of course Jan, he was on the bench in the last match and Jan is Jan, he gives us that stablity."

In addition, Mourinho has said he is taking the competition very seriously.

"l have spoken many times in this column and the media about my love for the FA Cup. It is a competition we all want to win and I am certain the players will show that this evening with the same determination and desire they demonstrated against City," he said.

"We welcome this evening's visitors after facing them twice in quick succession recently, which means we are fully aware of their quality. We will need to be at the top of our game to progress past this strong Southampton side.

"Meanwhile, we are looking forward to our Champions League round of 16 first leg against RB Leipzig which comes in a busy period for us,just three days after our trip to Aston Villa.

"While we are still in the FA Cup we will always dream of lifting that famous trophy, so please get behind the players tonight and show them how much you also believe. I hope you enjoy your evening with us."
