Jose Mourinho explains why Japhet Tanganga and Erik Lamela started for Tottenham against Watford

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho has explained his somewhat surprising decisions for the clash at Watford.

Mourinho has backed Japhet Tanganga once again as he makes his third straight start in all competitions, this time at left-back.

Spurs beat Middlesbrough last time out in their third round FA Cup replay during midweek, with Giovani Lo Celso and Erik Lamela the goalscorers in that game.

Mourinho told football.london on Friday that Lo Celso was tired, while Lamela had played even less football in recent weeks.

However, both have recovered enough to start the game.

Mourinho explained those calls in a pre-match interview with BT Sport and talked about how Harry Kane's injury has forced him to change his way of setting up in forward areas of the field.

"Tanganga deserves it. He played two good matches. He did everything to try and prove he is ready," Mourinho told BT Sport.

"Lamela is an important player for us. He was out with injury and now he's back. He played well (against Middlesbrough).

"At the moment we don't have some of our attacking players so we have to try and play in a different way.

"We don't have that striking power and the number nine we are used to playing with. We have to play in a different way."
