Jose Mourinho explains what he has changed about Tottenham Hotspur this season

Jose Mourinho believes the mentality of his Tottenham Hotspur players is changing and getting to where he wants it to be.

When the Portuguese arrived at the club he made it very clear in an early team meeting that he wanted his players to not be so "nice" and be more intelligent in the way they conduct themselves on the pitch.

When asked ahead of the Premier League clash at Liverpool - the top two in the table - whether he had changed his players and taken them away from that niceness.

"I believe so. I'm not saying we're better or worse than before. I'm saying that we're different and we're going in the direction I want us to be," Mourinho told Amazon Prime Video.

While both Mourinho and Jurgen Klopp's men are at the top end of the table, the Spurs boss does not believe they should be counted among the favourites.

"Other teams spend vast amounts of money. Tottenham no, the maximum ambition we can show is that we want to win the next match," he said.

"I cannot predict what is going to happen [in the title race]. I can only say what we want to do. We want to win."

On the game against Liverpool, Mourinho said it was not fundamental that Spurs had to win the encounter at Anfield.

"To be top of the league with the same number of points as Liverpool is not fundamental for us," he said.

"The fundamental thing is to play match after match and come with this mentality every game. We want to compete, we want to show our evolution and win matches, we come here tonight and it's not going to change that.

"Three possible results of course. They're not just the champion but the super champion with what they did last year. We want to win but we know what we have ahead of us."
