Jose Mourinho explains team selection for Marine clash after Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris rested

Jose Mourinho has explained his team selection for Tottenham's FA Cup clash with Marine today.

Spurs are on Merseyside taking on the eighth-tier side in the FA Cup third-round this evening and Mourinho put a strong side out for the clash.

The likes of Harry Kane and Son Heung-min were rested, but Matt Doherty, Toby Alderweireld, Ben Davies and Moussa Sissoko all started at Rossett Park.

And that's out of respect to Marine, according to Mourinho, with the non-league minnows winning six games to reach this stage of the competition having entered at the first qualifying round.

Marine v Tottenham: FA Cup third-round preview

“First of all, we have to win and second, we have to enjoy and keep this with us," he told BBC before the game.

"This is an experience to go back as a kid playing in these kind of pitches, but we have to respect them, and to do that, we play with a strong team."

Mourinho also revealed what he told his team ahead of the game, adding: "I told my players that when we lose matches in the Premier League, it’s my fault, but if we lose this match today, it’s not my fault, it’s their fault.

"That’s the way I found to put a little bit of pressure on them. I believe it’s not gonna be easy, it’s small, it’s windy, it’s cold, of course they are gonna compete with everything they have.

"But we have to do our job and our job is to win the match. The players don’t have to show me anything, they just have to show me how much they love football and if you love football a lot, you enjoy playing here.”

Tottenham went on to take a four-goal lead within 37 minutes at Rosset Park with Carlos Vinicius scoring a hat-trick and Lucas Moura also getting on the scoresheet.
