Jose Mourinho explains how Arsenal midfielder Mateo Guendouzi can get even better

Jose Mourinho reckons Matteo Guendouzi can get even better for Arsenal after his North London derby showing.

The Gunners midfielder set up Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang with a fine pass for their equaliser as Unai Emery's men recovered from 2-0 down to draw with Tottenham at the Emirates on Sunday.

However, Mourinho believes Guendouzi can hit another level providing he's a bit more forward-thinking.

He told Sky Sports : "Sometimes when I watch matches I am a bit critical – in a good sense, on the coaching side of it – because sometimes I think Guendouzi plays too easy and too many square passes when he can look forward.

"His first control normally is immediately for a sideways pass. He played a good game today and this is a great example of what he can do, because he’s a kid with talent.

"But he needs that kind movement and Aubameyang made a fantastic run for him."

The youngster has already featured more than 50 times for Arsenal since his £7million move from Lorient last summer.

Emery admits he's got high hopes for the Frenchman.

The Emirates chief said: "He is very young but he’s progressing. Last year was amazing for him, his progress here, taking confidence, taking rhythm, knowing the Premier League.

"This year he has started giving us one step more. Tactically with the ball he gives us a lot of control and the combination [play] for us is very important; he’s one of the key for that.

"But also he is working to take the balance defensively and working his body to progress and be stronger in the situations needed in the Premier League. Today is one step more.

"He’s very demanding with himself, when he’s playing like today I prefer to have the balance. When he is playing one match with less performance I’ll help him to achieve the next step going ahead."
