Jose Mourinho explains Harry Kane's penalty approach ahead of England vs Germany in Euro 2020

Former Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho has said it is 'impossible' to replicate Harry Kane's penalty approach ahead of England vs Germany at Euro 2020.

The Portuguese boss was sacked mid-April by Tottenham after a poor run of form in all competitions. Mourinho only lasted a total of 86 matches in charge of the north London club.

Despite the short stint with the Lillywhites, Kane was still a shining light in a faltering Spurs side.

Kane, 27, scored a total of six penalty kicks last season for Spurs in all competitions, and may be required on that front tonight as England take on Germany at Wembley in a Euro 2020 knockout clash.

Kane's now-former boss Mourinho has explained on talkSPORT why his penalty technique is so special.

“To replicate is impossible," Mourinho said. "There are even coaches who take the players to the stadium, put the crowd noise on to try and replicate it, but there is no chance.

"In the Harry Kane situation, there is something I love about Harry, and that is when he goes to the game, he knows if there is a penalty, how he is going to take it.

“It is not like in the last moment he makes a decision or changes his mind, Harry decides the game, a few days before the game how he is going to take it and then spends three or four days before the game practicing that shot and I just love that, I feel it is one thing to take a penalty in a normal match, but it is another to take a penalty in a match of this kind of dimension."

Kane's ability to stay cool under pressurised situations could come in handy if the England and Germany game isn't settled after 120 minutes.

“There is enough pressure, probably your central nervous system is not ready for you after 120 minutes to go there and be completely cool, fresh, look to the keeper and make your decision in relation to the move that the keeper makes," Mourinho added.

"I believe really, that you have to go on a decision already made, as you know I am one of the top coaches with the worst records on penalty shootouts, that means I think a lot about it, I really know my players that missed penalties on these big occasions were players that changed their mind while running to the ball."

Kane is yet to set Euro 2020 alight with his goalscoring prowess, and his ex-boss believes that Germany can take advantage with how he and two other players specifically have changed their penalty-kick patterns over time - if it was to come to this point in the contest.

Mourinho pointed out: “What I thought before, in this moment the analysis is of an incredible level, Manuel Neuer, he knows where Sterling, Rice and Kane have taken them for the last ten seasons. He can see the way they have changed their penalties down the years."
