Jose Mourinho drops hint over his Tottenham defensive plan as he discusses formation change

Tottenham fans certainly raised their eyebrows the last time the team were in league action following Jose Mourinho's decision to change things up in terms of his formation.

Heading to Bramall Lane to take on basement boys Sheffield United, the head coach opted for a three-man defence and wing-backs despite the fact the Blades had only won one league game all season.

With many wanting Spurs to go all out against Chris Wilder's men in their attempt to get back to winning ways, fans needn't have worried as the team still ran out 3-1 winners in South Yorkshire courtesy of Serge Aurier, Harry Kane and Tanguy Ndombele goals.

Even though a back three can be seen as rather negative with Mourinho bringing in an extra centre-back, the switch allowed Aurier and Sergio Reguilon to do what they do best by giving the team an extra threat in the final third with their attacking runs.

Tottenham v Liverpool: Premier League match preview

Now perhaps unlikely to repeat the formation against Liverpool with Reguilon out injured, the head coach has refused to rule out lining up with it again between now and May.

"We wanted to be very aggressive in that match, to press really high. We knew the problems we had at Sheffield last season," he explained.

"Many times playing with three [at the back] can be a very offensive way, we pressed the ball very, very high. We created chances. It was a special match...but I'm not saying we cannot play again with the back three.

"We did it against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup and the team is progressing, they are going to get more experience, learn more. So I'm not saying in the future they cannot play it again."

In the absence of Reguilon for tonight's game at home to Liverpool, Mourinho potentially may have to call upon Japhet Tanganga at left-back if Ben Davies, who came off late on at Wycombe on Monday, isn't deemed fit enough to start.

Currently in sixth and one point behind Liverpool in the league table, a win will see the Lilywhites climb into fourth and close to within five points of leaders Man City.
