Jose Mourinho delivers verdict on Bruno Fernandes start at Manchester United

Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho has praised Bruno Fernandes for the way he has adapted to the Premier League.

The Manchester United midfielder has made an instant impact since arriving at Old Trafford during the January transfer window, scoring two goals and providing three assists in his five Premier League appearances for the club.

Fernandes will look to continue that form when United travel to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Friday night as the league gets back under way.

Speaking in his Zoom pre-match press conference ahead of the game, Spurs boss Mourinho was asked about the midfielder’s form.

“He’s a good player, he plays in a good team in a big club,” he said.

“‘And normally good players, sooner or later, they adapt and they perform. In this case, he arrived and he found the team also in a good period, a good period of results.

“I think he’s doing very well.”

Tottenham were previously linked with a transfer move for Fernandes before United completed the deal for the Portugal international, with Spurs seeing a bid rejected for the midfielder last summer.

Another link between the clubs is Mourinho himself, who spent two-and-a-half years in charge at Old Trafford before being shown the door in December 2018.

But, the now Spurs boss has insisted that there is no advantage of him knowing a lot of the United squad.

“It doesn’t help. Honestly, it doesn’t help,” he said. “Of course I know some of their players, but I try to know the players from every team even when I didn’t have the chance to work with them like I did with some of the United boys.

“You try to study as much as you can. So normally yes I study opponents, collectively and individually, that’s normal.”
