Jose Mourinho delivers update on Spurs defender Jan Vertonghen

Jose Mourinho has delivered an update on Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen and when he will be able to select him in his team.

The Belgian has missed the past four Tottenham matches with a hamstring problem and was unable to feature in the new Spurs head coach's first match at West Ham United on Saturday afternoon.

The 32-year-old struggled for starts at the start of the season under Mauricio Pochettino and then for form when he did get back into the team for a run of games.

Vertonghen's hamstring injury has kept him out for the past four weeks but Mourinho had a positive update on the centre-back and that he could be back for Spurs' home Premier League game against Bournemouth.

"Vertonghen is almost there but not yet. Tomorrow will be the first day he joins the group," he told BT Sport.

"So maybe not the Champions League match (vs Olympiacos on Tuesday) but I think in one week he can join us."

Vertonghen, like his former Ajax team-mates Toby Alderweireld and Christian Eriksen, has just seven months left on his contract and Mourinho said this week that he will discuss all of the trio's futures in the weeks ahead.
