Jose Mourinho delivers update on Danny Rose's future at Tottenham following Southampton draw

Danny Rose was left out of the Tottenham squad to face Southampton in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Saturday.

The left-back has not made the squad of a Spurs clash since the 1-0 defeat to Liverpool on January 11, missing the last four matches in all competitions.

Rose was tipped to leave the club last summer, with the full-back missing the club's pre-season tour to "explore opportunities with other clubs".

But, like a number of other players, he remained with the club.

Speculation continues around his future, although the outspoken defender revealed he had no plans to leave before his contract runs out in the summer of 2022.

Jose Mourinho's predictions were correct

Speaking in November he said: "People upstairs at Tottenham were trying to do what they were trying to do [in the summer]. I’ve said [to them] I've got 18 months left on my contract and I'm not going anywhere until my contract has finished.

"In January, you're probably going to hear something [about my future]. I'm telling you right now that I'm not going anywhere until my contract is finished."

The January transfer window is here and lo and behold there are question marks over his future in N17, especially given he is being left out of Mourinho squads, with young Japhet Tanganga playing at left-back against the Saints.

Mourinho was asked about Rose during his post-match press conference.

And when asked if Rose would still be at the club when the transfer window closes next week, he could not answer.

"I don’t know, I don’t know," he said. He was not injured [today]. It was my decision [to leave him out]."

And when pressed on that, Mourinho added: "My decision is based on performance and based on my analysis. Nothing else really.

"We have Ben Davies injured for a long time. We have Danny, Japhet, who is not a left-back but is very solid and very concentrated and very difficult for him to make a mistake, even when playing against opposition in a position that is not his position.

"And Ryan [Sessegnon] is a 19-year-old kid who is learning how to defend and of course his natural appetite is to be offensive. So we have four options and it’s my decision."
