Jose Mourinho defends Pep Guardiola's Man City Champions League record

Jose Mourinho says it is only a matter of time before Pep Guardiola lifts the Champions League with Manchester City.

Former Manchester United boss Mourinho was speaking about Guardiola's record in Europe since leaving Barcelona, where the Spaniard has not progressed to a final in eight years.

In his three years at City, Guardiola has exited the competition at the round of 16 stage before two consecutive quarter final defeats to Liverpool and Tottenham respectively.

But despite a historic rivalry with Guardiola, stemming from their days as Barcelona and Real Madrid managers, Mourinho insisted Guardiola will one day win the competition again.

He told BeIN Sports: "When you speak about Guardiola, you are speaking about not just of one of the best managers of now, you are speaking about one of the best managers ever.

"And he won the Champions League twice, I think twice with Barcelona, then he didn't win it with Bayern, didn't win it with Manchester City.

"But we cannot say that Pep is not the right guy to win the Champions League with Man City.

"Until now, no, but can you find somebody better than him to win it with Man City? I think it will be just a question of time."
