Jose Mourinho confirms Ledley King appointment to join Tottenham backroom staff

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho has confirmed the appointment of Ledley King to his backroom team.

The 39-year-old, a former Spurs captain who was named club ambassador after retiring in 2012, will replace Ricardo Formosinho from next season, joining Mourinho's first-team staff.

King is understood to have impressed the Spurs manager while working with the defensive players since the suspension of football in March. Standard Sport understands that King's role isn't specifically a coaching role.

While the club are yet to officially confirm the appointment, the Portuguese revealed King would be replacing Formosinho following the 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace.

"I don't think the club will be upset with me by making it official," he told Sky Sports.

"We are going to replace Ricardo with Ledley King.

"I met him. I worked quite close with him in this period. I know what he can give. I know what he has to learn and he's very happy to do it.

"The fans of course love him, and he's one more connection with our fans, the local community, from the young people that he knows from the academy."

A one-club man, King made over 320 appearances for Spurs and is said to be a calm presence and well-respected by the current squad.
