Jose Mourinho claims Manchester United player should have been sent off vs Tottenham

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho responded to claims VAR had benefitted his side against Manchester United, by suggesting Paul Pogba was lucky not to have received a red card.

United felt aggrieved in the first half of their encounter at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium when Edinson Cavani looked to have opened the scoring after latching onto Pogba's pass. Referee Chris Kavanagh then disallowed the goal after reviewing the VAR screen, citing a foul by Scott McTominay on Heung-Min Son.

After reacting angrily to the officials, United then fought back — after Son's opening goal — to win 3-1, thanks to goals from Cavani, Fred and Mason Greenwood.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Mourinho didn't comment too much on the McTominay incident, but claimed Pogba had fouled his player and could have been sent off.

He admitted United's midfield proved too wrong on the day. The Spurs boss said: "We played against a good team, lots of strong players in midfield. We had great occasions to score a second goal. We hit the woodwork and were dominant in that period.

"My opinion was a good game. My opinion was we didn't deserve this result at all. We were unlucky because maybe [Paul] Pogba should get a red card for an elbow on Serge Aurier."

Mourinho also admitted VAR was confusing the game, with teams unable to celebrate for fear their goals may be disallowed.

He added: "I don't know anything anymore [about VAR]. I watched Fulham versus Wolves. I don't understand anything anymore. Sometimes you get, sometimes you don't get.

"I don't know how to comment. You don't celebrate a goal because you are afraid."
