Jose Mourinho backs Sergio Ramos for Premier League move amid Chelsea transfer links

Former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has claimed that Sergio Ramos would have a similar impact to Blues defender Thiago Silva in the Premier League.

Ramos announced on Wednesday that he will be leaving Real Madrid this summer after 16 years with Los Blancos.

The 35-year-old won five La Liga titles, four Champions Leagues and two Copa del Rays during his time in the Spanish capital but revealed that the club's hierarchy withdrew their contract offer in recent weeks, leaving him without a club at the end of the month.

A host of European clubs have been linked with the Spanish international given he is available for free this summer, with Chelsea mooted as a potential destination.

The Blues could be in the hunt for a new centre-back this summer after Fikayo Tomori sealed a permanent move to AC Milan and their former manager Jose Mourinho thinks Ramos would be a great signing for any Premier League side.

"Honestly, I have no idea", Mourinho told TalkSport when asked where Ramos will end up this summer.

"He’s the kind of player that you expect to finish his career at Real Madrid so it’s quite surprising that it didn’t happen.

"I believe that in spite of his injuries this season that kept him out for a couple of months – and even the decision from Luis Enrique to leave him out of the Euros – that doesn’t hide the fact that he’s still a very good player, capable of performing a couple more seasons at a very good level.

"I can imagine that we are going to see him playing for a very good club, also because only a top club would be in condition to fulfil his financial demands.’

"You look to Thiago Silva and it’s a similar situation. He didn’t stay in Paris where people expected him to stay a couple more seasons.

"He came to Chelsea, signed one season with an option for one more. He didn’t play every match, he had a couple of little issues but in big matches he gave great stability.

"You can imagine how much he helped the team to develop, the young players and the leadership.

"I believe Ramos is in a similar situation. He’s even more physical than Thiago to cope with the Premier League’s demands.

"He’s very good in the air and I have no doubts that he can play with intensity and for the demands of the Premier League."
