Jose Mourinho has returned to the Premier League after being appointed as the new manager of Tottenham Hotspur.
The football world was stunned last night as Spurs sacked Mauricio Pochettino after five-and-a-half years in charge of the North London club.
His departure came just five months after leading Tottenham to a Champions League final but a poor start to the season has left Spurs 14th in the Premier League.
He has now been replaced by the former Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Manchester United manager, who has penned a contract until the end of the 2022/23 season.
After his appointment was confirmed, Mourinho told Tottenham's official website: “I am excited to be joining a Club with such a great heritage and such passionate supporters. The quality in both the squad and the academy excites me. Working with these players is what has attracted me.”
Mourinho's first task will be to revitalise Spurs' fortunes in the Premier League, while his long term goal will be to deliver Tottenham's first major trophy since winning the 2008 League Cup.
Another goal on his agenda will be to end his long run without a win at St James' Park. Since first arriving in England in 2004, the 'Special One' is yet to win a league game away at Newcastle.
Mourinho will have to wait until May 2, 2020, for his first chance to finally secure a league win at Newcastle and it could have serious ramifications for both sides, given it is the third last game of the 2019/20 campaign.
