Jose Mourinho appears to be in pole position to succeed Mauricio Pochettino as Tottenham manager.
The former Chelsea and Manchester United boss was immediately made the bookmakers’ favourite for the job after Spurs announced Pochettino’s sacking on Tuesday evening.
Chairman Daniel Levy admitted the board were ‘extremely reluctant’ to make the decision, but concede that domestic results were simply not good enough, despite Pochettino guiding Spurs to their first Champions League final just six months ago.
Mourinho has been out of work since being sacked as Man Utd boss last December, as his availability and experience would appear to be hugely temping to Levy.
Widespread reports in the hours after Pochettino’s exit stated that Spurs and Mourinho were in in ‘advanced talks’ to bring him to club.
An announcement could be made as early as Wednesday morning.
Levy and Spurs were keen to bring Mourinho to the Premier League back in 2004, before Chelsea and Roman Abramovich moved in to strike a deal.
Mourinho’s still lives in London and he famously stayed at the Lowry Hotel in Manchester during his time at Old Trafford, travelling back to the capital to be with his family whenever he could.
Spurs defender Toby Alderweireld was asked about Mourinho’s potential arrival after Belgium’s match with Cyrpus, and the 30-year-old admitted that he expected a ‘big manager’ to arrive.
"Spurs are a big club so I know there will be a big manager for us. Hopefully we know [who it is] quickly."
