Jose Mourinho and Tottenham handed Son Heung-min injury boost after early departure vs Arsenal

Son Heung-min's injury is not as bad as first feared, football.london understands.

Starting in Sunday's north London derby, the Tottenham attacker was on the pitch for only 19 minutes after appearing to sustain a hamstring injury.

Running behind the Arsenal defence and looking to get on the end of a long ball over the top, Son pulled up and immediately went to ground.

That proved to be the end of his afternoon, with Erik Lamela the man to come on and replace him in the 2-1 defeat.

Amid fears over the severity of the issue and the length of time he would be facing on the sidelines, football.london understands that the player could be back for the away trip to Newcastle United in Tottenham's first game after the international break.

It is also understood that he could potentially be back even quicker and in time for Sunday's away trip to Aston Villa.

Given the attacking options Jose Mourinho has at his disposal, Spurs certainly won't want to rush the player back with some very important games coming up on the agenda as they look to seal a top-four place and also triumph in the Europa League and Carabao Cup final.

Despite Son's injury at the Emirates, the player was named as part of the South Korea squad for their friendly against Japan in Yokohama next week.

While Spurs would ideally want their player to recover over the next couple of weeks ahead of a big end to the season, an early return at Villa Park on Sunday would likely see him represent his country during the international break.

Speaking after the defeat at the Emirates on Sunday, Mourinho confirmed that his player suffered a muscular issue but stated that Son is a player who recovers "very, very well" from any kind of injury.

"That’s football, I don’t know how long it is. Is muscular. Muscular is always not easy," he explained.

"He’s a guy that normally he recovers very, very well from any kind of injury. And that’s football. That’s accumulation of matches.

"In Europa League I gave him 30 minutes rest, so 90 minus 30 is 60, but 60 is still 60. And when you are in so many competitions, some players they have more minutes than others, which is normal, something that can happen."
