Jose Mourinho and the Tottenham problem that has the potential to impact his big 2020/21 plans

VAR was once again the major talking point on Sunday afternoon as Tottenham conceded a stoppage-time penalty against Newcastle United.

A goal to the good and on course for three points following Lucas Moura's early finish, the visitors somehow left with a point after Steve Bruce's side were awarded a controversial spot kick.

Eric Dier was adjudged to have handled the ball from Andy Carroll's header even though there was very little he could do as he had his back to the Newcastle frontman and was inches away from him.

VAR intervened and referee Peter Bankes was advised to review the pitchside monitor before pointing to the spot.

It was incredibly harsh on Tottenham to say the least.

Callum Wilson made no mistake from the spot to earn a share of the spoils in a game the Magpies had no right leaving N17 with any points in the bag.

Asked about the handball decision in his post-match press conference, Jose Mourinho said: "My team did a fantastic match, I cannot ask more from the players.

"Their goalkeeper was phenomenal. I cannot ask more from my players. We kept them away from the special box and we couldn't do more than what we did.

"The team played very very well. It was a very complete match, offensively and defensively.

"No problem defensively, we created a lot of chances. Really, really good, I'm very happy with the performance."

The game should've been out of sight way before the controversial penalty and Spurs only have themselves to blame for that.

Chances were there for the team over the course of the 90 minutes, with Son Heung-min, who went off at the break with a hamstring injury, hitting the woodwork on two occasions in the first half.

Harry Kane also had a couple of chances to net for the third successive game, while Dier really should have done so much better with a first-half header that went wide of the target.

Although there are plenty of points to be won and lost over the remainder of the season, Mourinho will be hoping the two points his side dropped on Sunday afternoon don't prove incredibly costly come May.

Spurs had their shooting boots on last weekend at Southampton and they must ensure that is the case going forward after the valuable lesson they learned against Newcastle.

It was also a similar story away at Lokomotiv Plovdiv in their first Europa League qualifier as they had opportunities to kill the tie before the hosts took a shock lead and left Spurs on the brink of an embarrassing European exit at the very first hurdle.

Shkendija away was also very much the same as the team couldn't add to Erik Lamela's early strike and in the end they had to bring on the big guns to get the job done after the North Macedonian side equalled things up with a stunning finish.

Whereas Mourinho's men got away with it in their Europa League fixtures, a number of Premier League teams can punish you if you do not take your chances.

Chelsea are coming up in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday and they have the quality in the final third to make Spurs pay if they waste their opportunities, with Manchester United, Sunday's opponents, also in the same boat.

Tottenham have an awful lot of quality in attack and they can challenge towards the top and for major honours if they can put games to bed early on.

VAR may have been the words on everyone's lips after Sunday's 1-1 draw but it may not have been so much of a talking point had Spurs taken their chances.

It's an area Mourinho needs to address and fast.
