Jose Mourinho and Daniel Levy's vital Harry Kane task which will shape Tottenham's future

It is not only Jose Mourinho's future at Tottenham that has come into question following Thursday night's Europa League mess.

In their hands to advance to the final eight of the competition after taking a two-goal advantage with them to Croatia, Spurs crashed out after losing 3-0 on the night against Dinamo Zagreb courtesy of Mislav Orsic's hat-trick.

Under intense pressure one month ago after a run of five defeats in six league games, Mourinho is now the favourite to be the next Premier League manager to lose his job.

A dreadful night for the club and quite clearly the lowest point of the season by some way, the result could have massive ramifications going forward.

Already a big season for Harry Kane in his quest to finally get his hands on some silverware, you wouldn't blame Tottenham's main man if he was now having second thoughts over remaining at the club.

Quite clearly a player who should be a Champions League regular as he is one of the best in the world, there's a very good chance he won't be participating in Europe's top competition for the second season in a row going on the team's last two performances.

Speaking to BT Sport after the defeat on Thursday evening, former Spurs forward Peter Crouch stated that their European exit could potentially push Kane and Son Heung-min towards the exit door.

"Going out of Europe tonight, their season is hanging by a thread," he explained. "When I look at someone like Harry Kane trudging off the pitch, I'm thinking - he's Champions League, he shouldn't even be playing in this competition.

"He's a Champions League player, he should be there talking alongside Lewandowski, Haaland, Mbappe... (and) Kane. He should be up there with those (players).

"He's gone out to Dinamo Zagreb today and that's the worrying thing - where's his head at?

"It's not just the manager, (it's) the players. Son (and) Kane, players who deserve to be playing at a higher level than Europa League.

"Of course they are loyal to Tottenham and we all hope they will be, but games like that certainly don't help."

Kane has made no secret of his desire to win trophies in the past and Spurs' lack of them gives him a real decision to make ahead of next season.

Tottenham can indeed end the campaign with a piece of silverware providing that they beat Man City in the Carabao Cup final at the end of next month, yet that may not be enough to convince the 27-year-old especially if they miss out on the top four come the final day.

It's most definitely still all to play for in their remaining ten games of the Premier League campaign but it is going to be tricky due to Chelsea's six-point advantage over them.

Thomas Tuchel's men do not look like conceding a goal at present never mind losing a game of football, although Spurs can crank up the pressure providing that they win their game in hand.

However, their final set of fixtures aren't exactly straightforward with the likes of Aston Villa, Manchester United, Everton and Leicester City all to come.

Securing a Champions League place for next season and winning the Carabao Cup could help sway Kane to remain, but there's also a chance it may not be enough to convince him that he can indeed meet his lofty targets in N17.

Managing to keep hold of his star player in previous years with no clubs able to meet Spurs' price tag, Daniel Levy will certainly not want to lose the academy graduate in what is set to be a pivotal summer for the club.

He may have no alternative but to give the green light to a move away, however, if Kane's desire is to go elsewhere in his bid to add major trophies to his CV.

An exit would give Spurs a significant cash boost to help them rebuild their squad, but surely their best chance of going on to win those much-craved trophies is by keeping Kane in north London for the foreseeable given the amount of goals he's plundered year after year.

Tottenham now have 11 games remaining in their 2020/21 calendar and every single one of them is crucial as they plan for the future.

Securing a Champions League place and winning the Carabao Cup will only help in their quest to keep the England captain at the club, failure to do so and it could become very tricky.

Kane is going to end his career with silverware on his CV one way or another but it remains to be seen if it will be with Spurs or another team.

Hopefully for Mourinho, Levy and everyone connected with the club it will be at Tottenham.
