Jose Mourinho and Daniel Levy's transfer strategy can spark a new period of Tottenham success

Jose Mourinho's Tottenham side have the chance to make a real statement come the start of the 2020/21 Premier League season.

Discovering their schedule for the new campaign this time last week, Spurs begin with a fixture on home soil as they take on Carlo Ancelotti's Everton side in N17.

Apart from the Carabao Cup and Europa League fixture chaos coming in September where they will face two games in 48 hours in successive weeks, the Lilywhites do have a kind set of games when it comes to the league.

Mourinho's men only face Manchester United out of last year's top six in their first eight matches with Southampton, Newcastle United, West Ham, Burnley, Brighton & Hove Albion and West Brom coming up either side of their trip to Old Trafford.

With their fellow top-six rivals given mixed starts to the season, Spurs, who finished last term strongly to clinch a European place on the final day, have the opportunity to start quickly and challenge towards the top of the league table.

What could play a part in a fast start is Mourinho and Daniel Levy's approach to this summer's transfer market.

Having announced the arrival of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Southampton on a five-year deal two weeks ago, the club last week completed a move for free agent Joe Hart following his Burnley release.

The duo add plenty of experience to the Spurs ranks and will also be important on the pitch and in the dressing room due to their leadership skills.

Mourinho now has just over two weeks if he wants to bring in new additions in time for the league opener against Everton on September 12, with the club having until the start of October this year to complete any remaining business.

The head coach will now be looking at other options to bring in to join Hojbjerg and Hart at the club and football.london understands that Wolves' Matt Doherty is a target.

Earning rave reviews in the top flight since Wolves won promotion back in 2018, the 28-year-old is seen as the ideal man to take over right-back duties from Serge Aurier.

Mourinho is said to be a huge fan of the player and a deal worth around £12million, not including add-ons, could see Doherty seal a move to the capital.

The one thing the trio all have in common is Premier League experience.

Their knowledge of the top flight means that they don't have to adapt to a new league and can literally hit the ground running from the very first whistle come the opening day, thus meaning the team could potentially fly out of the traps.

Spurs need to make a fast start this term having struggled 12 months ago under Mauricio Pochettino and the new additions, providing Doherty joins, can help them do just that.

Unfortunately the Lilywhites are still waiting to see the best of Tanguy Ndombele nearly 14 months on from his move from Lyon as he has failed to adjust to life in the Premier League.

Giovani Lo Celso was also in the same boat as the Frenchman to begin with before an extended run in the team saw him become an integral part of Mourinho's XI as he showed the form that saw the Lilywhites strike a deal with Real Betis for his services.

Foreign players do tend to take quite a while to fully settle into life in England and the Premier League but Spurs should have no such issues with new additions as things stand at present.

The Lilywhites also need to bring in a new striker this summer and Bournemouth's Callum Wilson has been linked with a switch following the Cherries' relegation to the Championship.

Knowing how to find the net in the top flight after hitting 44 in five seasons for the club, the addition of the 28-year-old would also be another smart piece of business from Spurs if they can get a deal over the line for the England international.

Adding more Premier League experience to the ranks this summer could see Tottenham get a head start on their rivals and Mourinho and Levy's transfer approach may in fact prove a winner as they bid to avoid last year's failings.
