Jose Mourinho aims dig at Manchester United player Luke Shaw

Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has identified a problem that Harry Maguire will have to learn to deal with this season - covering for Luke Shaw.

United's new club-record signing made his Premier League debut on the opening weekend against Chelsea at Old Trafford.

Mourinho also made a debut on Sunday, as he made an appearance for Sky Sports' Premier League coverage, and he spotted something significant at half-time.

When analysing United's performance, Mourinho claimed that Maguire will have to cover for Shaw "a lot of times".

“Chelsea moves the ball well but they don’t look for an overlap a lot. When they do, Maguire is the one that has to jump on the outside as United’s midfield players are not defending in the box,” he told Sky Sports.

“When Maguire has to cover for Luke Shaw, he will learn he has to do this a lot of times during the season, the space in the face of the ball, somebody has to arrive.

“They did not arrive and, with the nature of the players, I don’t think they will arrive many times this season.”

Mourinho had a difficult relationship with Shaw, although the left-back eventually won the Portuguese over and signed a new long-term contract to secure his Old Trafford future.

When he signed his new deal last October, Mourinho said: "Luke fully deserves this contract. He understood his development process, he has worked really hard at every level and he always believes in himself which is a great attribute to have.

"Luke is still young and is improving all the time and he must feel very proud of himself. I am delighted that we are keeping such a talented young English player with a bright future ahead of him."
