Jose Mourinho aims dig at Manchester United over penalty record: 'Bruno Fernandes had about 20 to score'

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho appears to have aimed a dig at Manchester United over the number of penalties his former club were awarded during the most recent Premier League season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side earned a total of 14 spot-kicks in the top-flight throughout 2019/20, including for the decisive opening goal in a final day 2-0 win against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium that secured Champions League qualification for next term.

Rivals Manchester City (11) were the only other team to be awarded double-digit penalties in the Premier League this season, with relegated Watford third on the list with eight ahead of Leicester and Chelsea (both seven).

United converted 10 of those 14 penalties, with six of that number coming from the boot of star January recruit Bruno Fernandes, who netted a total of 10 goals and provided eight assists during a terrific start to his Old Trafford career.

And current Tottenham coach Mourinho - who was sacked by United in December 2018 following two-and-a-half years in charge - seemingly could not resist a jibe at the Red Devils' expense over penalties, with Spurs receiving just four all season.

“Bruno came in, was fit, played very well, improved the United team and also proved to be a great penalty taker, one of the best in the world, because he had about 20 to score," he told Portuguese outlet Record.
