Jose expected to become major hurricane by Friday: NHC

(Reuters) - Jose is expected to gain in strength and intensify into a major hurricane by Friday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said on Thursday.

The hurricane is located about 715 miles (1150 km) east of the Lesser Antilles with maximum sustained winds 90 mph (150 km/h), the Miami-based weather forecaster said.

Swells generated by Jose are likely to affect portions of the Leeward Islands by Saturday, the NHC said, adding hurricane watches were issued for the northern portion of the region.
