Jose Enrique: 'Rafa Benitez has made a mistake joining Everton'

Jose Enrique thinks Rafa Benitez' latest career move is a mistake.

The former Newcastle and Liverpool left-back wrote in his latest column for empireofthekop.com that 'it doesn’t matter how much money Everton would have thrown at me, I wouldn’t have gone there.'

Best remembered on Tyneside for his partnership and friendship with Jonas Gutierrez, for scoring a vital goal at home to Nottingham Forest in the 2009-10 race for promotion, and donning the gloves at St. James' Park when Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina was red-carded, Enrique hasn't held back on his fellow Spaniard Benitez' return to the Premier League.

'He’s still living in the city, he loves the place, the fans love him and he’s still a big Liverpool supporter.

'If he doesn’t start well, the Everton fans are going to go against him quickly, especially because of his past.

'I don’t think he needed to take the job, he’s been a very successful manager, he could go to any club in Europe but not to Everton or Manchester United.'

Enrique, who was diagnosed with a rare brain tumour in 2018 less than a year after he quit football, now works as a pundit having received the all-clear in April 2019.
