CHICAGO _ The White Sox did a lot of walking in the eighth and ninth innings against the Yankees on Tuesday night at Guaranteed Rate Field _ and then they celebrated a walk-off victory.
With the Sox down a run, Yankees reliever Dellin Betances walked Kevan Smith and Alen Hanson and hit Yolmer Sanchez with a pitch. Jose Abreu's two-run single to left field then gave the Sox a 4-3 victory to halt a four-game losing streak.
The Sox also scored a run in the eighth after Yankees relievers Domingo German and Tyler Clippard issued four walks, including Todd Frazier's with the bases loaded to cut it to 3-2. But Matt Davidson struck out on the 11th pitch of his at-bat to keep the Sox from tying.
Sox left-hander Jose Quintana pitched 6 1/3 scoreless innings, giving up two hits with four walks and six strikeouts Tuesday. He stranded runners on second and third by striking out Tyler Austin looking in the fourth to end his most serious jam of the night.
After a 5.60 ERA in April and May, he has a 1.78 ERA over five starts in June, including back-to-back scoreless outings against the Twins and Yankees.
Reliever Tommy Kahnle coughed up an early Sox lead, allowing three eighth-inning runs as the Yankees took a 3-2 lead.
Aaron Judge's RBI single up the middle and Gary Sanchez's two-run double to center field with two out did the damage.
Abreu hit an RBI double in the third inning to help the Sox to an early lead.
Yankees right-hander Luis Severino struck out 12 over seven innings, but the Sox broke through in the third. Kevan Smith and Yolmer Sanchez singled before Abreu's hit down the right-field line with two out.
Sox manager Rick Renteria gave players a late arrival time Tuesday as the club tries to battle fatigue from a road-heavy first-half schedule.
