Jose Abreu, Melky Cabrera hit first homers as White Sox top Tigers in 10 innings, 6-4

DETROIT _ First baseman Jose Abreu made it clear he was ready to be back in the White Sox lineup Saturday afternoon at Comerica Park by launching his first two home runs of the season.

Abreu's second-inning solo shot off Tigers right-hander Michael Fulmer and his eighth-inning shot off lefty Blaine Hardy helped the Sox top the Tigers, 6-4, in 10 innings.

Melky Cabrera also hit his first homer of the year, off Alex Wilson in the 10th, to provide the winning run as the Sox won their sixth straight game.

Abreu didn't hit any homers over the first 21 games, the longest he has gone without a homer to start a year in four seasons with the Sox. It was his seventh career multi-homer game.

Abreu had missed a game with a strained right hip flexor, but Sox manager Rick Renteria said Abreu went through agility work with trainer Allen Thomas on Saturday morning and felt he was ready to return. Abreu suffered the injury Wednesday when he slipped while trying to field a grounder in the infield.

"He knows we're just trying to monitor them when they go through aches and pains, so it's not a long-term (problem) with them," Renteria said. "We have to be mindful of that. I'll still be watching him during the ballgame, seeing how he's doing."

Sox closer David Robertson suffered his first blown save of the season when he surrendered two ninth-inning runs against the Tigers to send the game to extra innings tied at 4-4.

Robertson entered in the ninth with a 4-2 lead, but Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez homered to right field on his first pitch to make it a one-run game.

John Hicks doubled to left field with one out and scored on Alex Avila's pinch-hit single to right field to tie it at 4-4. Robertson had opened the year 5-for-5 on saves entering Saturday.

But Robertson redeemed himself by staying in to pitch in the 10th. He walked Tyler Collins but got Martinez to fly out to left field for the final out.

Todd Frazier hit an RBI single in the first for a 1-0 Sox lead. After Cody Asche and Omar Narvaez hit back-to-back singles in the second, Asche scored on Leury Garcia's sacrifice fly.

Avisail Garcia gave the Sox extra cushion after Cabrera's homer in the 10th with an RBI triple to drive in pinch runner Yolmer Sanchez.

Sox left-hander Derek Holland allowed two earned runs on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts over 61/3 innings.

Holland gave up a leadoff triple to Ian Kinsler in the bottom of the first. Center fielder Leury Garcia got turned around on the hit to right-center field and it bounced off his glove.

After a Nicholas Castellanos walk, Martinez hit an RBI single to center field for the Tigers' first run of the game. Mike Mahtook doubled to open the sixth and scored Justin Upton's RBI single to right field.
