Jose Abreu hits ball out of the park, ends up with a two-run single

The Chicago White Sox lost a run on a three-run shot to left field Friday night during a high-scoring game against the Tigers when first baseman Jose Abreu ran past teammate Tim Anderson on the base path in a bizarre scene. With two men on in the bottom of the seventh, Abreu launched a ball that just cleared the wall, temporarily giving the White Sox a 12-10 lead.

Anderson was at first when Abreu homered, but thinking the ball may be caught at the wall, he went back to the base to potentially tag up. Abreu unaware that Anderson had gone back to first, passed him as he rounded the base on his home run trot. As a result, Abreu was ruled out after a review, and his three-run homer was scored as a two-run single.

Abreu took responsibility for the error after the game, explaining that he didn’t see Anderson as he rounded first.

Via MLB.com:

“I made a mistake. … It was my mistake,” Abreu said through interpreter Billy Russo. “When I hit the ball, I just thought it was a regular fly ball to the warning track and I didn’t see TA. I take full responsibility for that. I felt bad, but we won the game and that’s what matters.”

Anderson went on to win the game in the bottom of the 9th with a walkoff solo shot.
