First baseman Jose Abreu exited Sunday afternoon’s game in the sixth inning after being hit in the knee by a 96 mile per hour sinker from Mariners reliever JT Chargois.

Abreu left the game with help from team trainers. The White Sox later reported that X-rays on his knee were negative for a break. He is listed as day-to-day.

Up to bat with no outs and Brian Goodwin and Yoan Moncada on first and second, Abreu took Chargois’ 1-0 pitch on his left knee and collapsed to the ground. He was in obvious pain and threw his helmet on the grass behind home plate as trainers came to assist him. Abreu had to be helped to his feet as fans chanted “MVP” and did not put weight on his left leg while trainers assisted him to the locker room.

Abreu has had an array of minor injuries this season, including a collision with Royals’ Hunter Dozier in May. He has not had to go on the injured list yet this year.
