Jorhat admin body staff held for ‘abusing’ PM Narendra Modi on Facebook

JORHAT: An employee of the Jorhat deputy commissioner’s office was arrested on Sunday for allegedly making some objectionable comments on social media against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The arrested person was produced before a local court and sent to judicial custody.

The man has been identified as Abhilash Dutta (30) of Pub Bongal Pukhuri area in Jorhat town. Abhilash is an employee at the Bakijai branch in Jorhat deputy commissioner’s office here.

The complaint was lodged by the general secretary of the BJP’s Other Backward Classes (OBC) Morcha, Binoy Likhok, who is also an advocate in Jorhat. Likhok told TOI that he lodged the complaint before the officer-in-charge of Jorhat police station after seeing a post of the accused on his Facebook account against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“Abhilash Dutta uploaded a post in his FB account against Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday. Dutta used slang to abuse the Prime Minister. On seeing it, I personally sent a message to him through messenger with a request to remove the post. But he threatened me with dire consequences and demanded Rs 1 lakh from me instead to remove the post,” Likhok said.

“Even after my request the accused made objectionable comments against the PM. Finding no option, I lodged the FIR seeking legal action against him.”

Jorhat police station officer-in-charge Chidananda Borah said, “On receiving a complaint that he has used abusive language against the Prime Minister, we arrested Dutta from his residence at Pub Bongalpukhuri and produced him before the court today (Sunday). The court has sent him to 14 days’ judicial custody.”
