Jorginho takes swipe at Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi as he admits Ballon d'Or goal

Jorginho has taken a swipe at Ballon d'Or regular-winners Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi as he feels that he deserves to be recognised as the world's best player.

Ronaldo and Messi have dominated the award since 2008, with Luka Modric the only player to beat either to the award since then in 2018.

Jorginho had an incredible year for club and country as the won the Champions League and Euro 2020, and the Italian was awarded the UEFA Men's Player of the Year Award.

However, with the ballon d'Or fast approaching, the Chelsea star feels it's time he goes one better.

Does Lionel Messi deserve to win the ballon d'Or? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

Jorginho believes that he should win the ballon d'Or - according to reports in Italy - and the midfielder is in the running, although Messi is the favourite with Mohamed Salah and Robert Lewandowski just behind.

The three favourites all have one thing in common over Jorginho, goals. And the player has taken a swipe at Messi and also Ronaldo by suggesting that the award should factor in more than just goal scoring.

Jorginho told GloboEsporte: "It’s not up to me to say if I should win the Ballon d'Or, but it would be an incentive for other players, to show that not only goals are taken into account."

However, the midfielder revealed it is certainly something that he is thinking about, as he said: "I don't want to have too many expectations, but I would be hypocritical if I said I don't think about it.

"It's great if it happens, but if it doesn't, I won’t complain. I keep my feet on the ground and I focus on something else, I've already won the best player of the year by UEFA."

Jorginho was named UEFA mens best player of the year after his outstanding performances for Italy led them to international silverware off the back of a European winning season under Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea.

However, the midfielder was eligible for both Brazil and Italy, but it has been revealed that he rejected Brazil's approach as it would've appeared 'ungrateful'.

Who has been Chelsea's best player this season?

Jorginho was born in southern Brazil but moved to Italy at the age of 15 and joined the Hellas Verona youth academy, but Brazil attempted to call him up to the national side in 2016.

The midfielder revealed: "They tried to convince me, but in the end I chose Italy, otherwise I would have been ungrateful.

"It would not be bad to win the World Cup. The Champions League and the Euros can't be underestimated, but the World Cup goes beyond anything else. We won't be the favourite in Qatar, but we can’t even go unnoticed as we won the Euros."
