Jorginho's agent explains how midfielder ended up at Chelsea rather than Manchester City

Though the Premier League season is still in its early stages, that Jorginho signed for Chelsea has turned out not just to be a relief to Blues fans delighted with the Italian's instant impact.

Indeed, it is fortunate for the rest of the league that a player of such obvious talent, a weapon of such clear and present danger, did not fall into the hands of the already ominous Manchester City side led by Pep Guardiola.

City were considered favourites to sign the Brazil-born playmaker all summer long but never got the deal over the line. When Maurizio Sarri finally agreed to take over at Chelsea he told the club to sign the 26-year-old midfielder and it was done as part of the deal that hired the Blues' new coach.

With the Premier League champions missing out, questions have swirled as to why a club that hasn't been shy in spending money over recent years couldn't secure the signing of a player so evidently ideal for their system.

And the answer appears to have been provided to us by Jorginho's agent, Joao Santos, speaking to Naples radio station Kiss Kiss this week.

"There was an agreement," Santos said regarding a potential move to City, "but not between the two clubs."

"Every part [both clubs and the player] have to be in agreement and in this case one of them was not," he said.

"That was when Chelsea asked what the situation was after Sarri went, and Jorginho went to London."

The rest, as they say, is history. Chelsea discovered just how tough Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis can be to negotiate with when it came to plucking Sarri and Jorginho away from the San Paolo and City, it seems, found it equally difficult to agree a fee with the Neapolitans. Not that Jorginho minds.

"He's really enjoying it in London," Santos said. "The team is in form. It's a great start. Going to Chelsea was a unique opportunity, the career of a player is very short and now we hope for the best."
