Jorginho reveals how 'close' he was to joining Man City before Chelsea move

Jorginho has revealed he was "close" to signing for Man City before completing a £50m move to Chelsea instead back in 2018.

The Italy international was a wanted man after impressing under Maurizio Sarri at Napoli, with Man City in the running for his signature with Pep Guardiola keen to bring in his passing ability to the base of midfield.

However, when Chelsea hired Maurizio Sarri it was Jorginho who the Italian made his key target and the Blues swooped in to make a deal happen under the noses of City.

Jorginho has since won the Champions League and FA Cup with Chelsea and admitted, that while a move to City was close, he's very happy to have chosen Chelsea in the end.

Speaking to BT Sport before the game between the two sides on Saturday afternoon, Jorginho said;

"It was close but it didn't happen. It's how it works in football sometimes.

"I'm very, very happy at Chelsea. It's a massive club and everyone here at the moment, the atmosphere is so good because everyone is humble.

"That's why everything is going so well."

City ended up signing Rodri from Atletico Madrid instead in a then-club record £60m deal, and the Spaniard has slotted into the role well as Fernandinho's long-term replacement.

Jorginho is one of the favourites for the Ballon d'Or this year after his role in Chelsea and Italy's European success having been key to both the Champions League and Euro 2020 triumphs of his teams.
