Jorginho resurgence under Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea leads to Ballon d'Or claims as milestone match approaches

The confidence and form of Jorginho in 2021 have been brilliant to watch at times. Jorginho has played like a man with confidence for a number of months since the arrival of Thomas Tuchel, and murmurs of him potentially winning the Ballon d'Or have been around since he won the European Championships with Italy in July.

If selected, Jorginho will make his 150th appearance for the club on Wednesday night as the side travel to Italy to face Juventus in the Champions League. This will be a chance to play on Italian soil after his switch from Napoli to Chelsea.

Jorginho joined the Blues in 2018 with the appointment of Maurizio Sarri. Due to him arriving on the same day as Sarri was hired at the club, he got labelled by sections of the Chelsea fan base as Sarri's son.

I did think at times his performances dipped and it might have been better to give him a nice rest to get back in the mental state to go again but I understood Sarri signed him due to his understanding of the style of football he wanted to play. Under Frank Lampard, he had a bit of an up and down form. At times it felt like he didn't fit the way Lampard wanted to play.

Since the arrival of Tuchel in January, the Blues have had a fair few players gain confidence in the system and find form and Jorginho is definitely one you would put in that category.

The composure he has on the ball and the way he's now looking to try quick passes a bit more often this season is a promising sign as Chelsea fixtures take a swing and we will need a few decisive passes from the side as teams set up with a low block and in the intention to keep it tight and frustrate the Blues.

Saturday's defeat to title rivals Man City will still be sore to some fans as the team failed to control the game, but the level of consistency Jorginho has had for club and country lately has been great and very much deserving of some praise.

Jorginho was named in the UEFA Men's Player of the Year Award, following in the footsteps of his Chelsea teammate N'Golo Kanté, as well as Saturday's opponent Kevin De Bruyne. In the summer, he picked up three major trophies with club and country, winning the UEFA European Championship with Italy in between club silverware of the Champions League and Super Cup with Chelsea.

To say he's had a good few months would be an understatement as his name keeps getting mentioned for the Ballon d'Or. The question is - is this just a case of Chelsea fans being biased, or does he actually deserve to win the award?
