Jorginho out, Thiago Silva dilemma - reporters' Chelsea XI to face Sheffield United

Chelsea face Sheffield United tomorrow evening looking for a sixth clean sheet on the trot.

Frank Lampard's team looks settled in recent weeks, despite Kai Havertz being ruled out with coronavirus, and the head coach may be reluctant to make too many changes.

But with an international break coming up that sees a number of players travelling long distances, could he prescribe some rest against a team yet to win this season?

Lampard will be loathe to disturb what has been working in the past three games and while there may be an argument to give Thiago Silva some rest considering he needs to cross the Atlantic for Brazil duty after tomorrow's game, the back five must remain the same.

So too should the front three with Christian Pulisic again ruled out, meaning the only real question mark should be in midfield.

It sometimes feels like Jorginho can be made a scapegoat and this is not meant as such but if 4-3-3 is the system again then Mateo Kovacic should come in for the Italian, allowing N'Golo Kante to sit deeper with the Croatian as a joint No8 alongside Mason Mount.

The balance is undoubtedly better when Kai Havertz is available but with the German out through coronavirus it is either Kante in a more advanced role to accomodate Jorginho or the vice-captain stepping down to the substitutes' bench.

Alan's team: Mendy; James, Rudiger, Zouma, Chilwell; Kovacic, Kante, Mount; Ziyech, Abraham, Werner.

When compiling a list of Chelsea’s most complete performances so far this season, Wednesday’s 3-0 win over Rennes would certainly make the list.

They kept a clean sheet, caused problems in attack and showed the right balance between looking like a side capable of scoring several goals while staying resolute enough when attempting to keep them out.

For that reason, confidence will be key in that group and with Kai Havertz set to miss out against due to a positive test for coronavirus, I would stick with the same starting 11 to face Sheffield United this weekend.

The Blades are looking like a shadow of the side they were last season and Lampard’s team must take advantage of that if they are to avoid a repeat of last season’s 2-2 draw with United on home soil.

The front three of Hakim Ziyech, Tammy Abraham and Timo Werner will be key to victory. In midweek, they showed plenty of fluidity and flair which will be key to break through an often assured Blades defence that is currently lacking in form.

Jonty's team: Mendy; James, Zouma, Silva, Chilwell; Kante, Jorginho, Mount; Ziyech, Abraham, Werner.
