Jorginho, Billy Gilmour, Mason Mount - Chelsea midfielders ranked from best to worst

Chelsea’s midfield has been arguably the most impressive positions over the course of the 2019/20 campaign.

The Blues have a plethora of talent in the first team, while they also have been excelling on loan with the likes of Conor Gallagher and Trevoh Chalobah doing well.

But how does the current first team midfield rank?

football.london takes a look right here.

7. Ruben Loftus-Cheek

Ruben Loftus-Cheek might be at the bottom of the list right now, but that has just been down to his injury this season.

The England international has spent the entire campaign trying to recover from that Achilles’ tendon rupture and getting himself back to full fitness.

When football returns, Loftus-Cheek should be raring to go and prove that he can continue to be a big player for the Blues.

6. Ross Barkley

It has been a difficult time for Ross Barkley at Chelsea, as the England international has never really been a regular due to injury and stiff competition.

He has shown in flashes of what he can do, with his excellent goal against Liverpool in the FA Cup and performance against Everton.

But he is still down the pecking order in the midfielders at the club and his future is uncertain.

5. Billy Gilmour

Having been part of the first team all season, there is a lot of hype around Billy Gilmour and what his future might show.

He showed that talent against Liverpool and Everton and now he is up there as really fighting for playing time with the more senior players.

If the Blues do move Jorginho on this season, then Gilmour is being groomed as his replacement in a long-term capacity.

4. Jorginho

Jorginho was given the vice-captain role by the Blues and his personality, passion and determination has been an impressive addition.

However, there are question marks about his future with Chelsea and if he is giving enough to the team in a defensive manner.

However, he is an experienced campaigner for the Blues who might be crucial for the club in the next few seasons.

3. Mason Mount

It really has been a breakout year for Mason Mount having come into the Chelsea side, having been on loan under Lampard at Derby County.

The 21-year-old has played all over the line, in midfield, number 10 role and also on the left wing, when needed.

Mount will only get better with the Blues and his consistency with minutes has showed that Lampard has real trust in him.

2. Mateo Kovacic

Having not massively impressed last season on loan, the Blues still took up the option to make him a permanent signing.

It was definitely the right move, with the Croatian having been one of the standout players for the Blues this season.

His game seems to have really fitted into what Lampard wants from his side, and now he will be a big part of the future.

1. N’Golo Kante

While the 2019/20 campaign has no doubt been a frustrating one for N’Golo Kante, with the injuries having sidelined him on several occasions, he still remains Chelsea’s number one central midfield.

At his very best, Kante is world class and can be the key player that the Blues need to push them back towards the top of the table.

Hopefully the break in action would have given Kante the time to recover from his latest injury and he will be fit and raring to go when football eventually returns.
