Jorge Mendes issues Bruno Fernandes Manchester United transfer update

Jorge Mendes says he still 'does not know' if Bruno Fernandes will join Manchester United this month, but insists the Portuguese midfielder will leave Sporting Lisbon this year.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side remain interested in a move for the 25-year-old this month as they look to strengthen their midfield following injuries to both Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay.

United do not want to overpay for a player yet to be proven in the Premier League and talks with Sporting stalled once they raised the price of the midfielder and offered no explanation for the sudden hike.

Sources say ‘nothing has changed’ on the situation since the weekend despite reports in Portugal giving the impression a deal is done or imminent.

Fernandes played his second game in five days for Sporting on Tuesday night as his side were knocked out by SC Braga at the semi-final stage of the Portuguese league cup.

Although Mendes does not directly represent Fernandes he touched base with the Portuguese midfielder last summer with the promise of securing him a move in 2020.

Speaking at an agent's conference in Barnet on Wednesday Mendes was asked about the future of Fernandes.

"I don’t know," Mendes said

"If he doesn’t leave now, he will leave for sure in the summer because Sporting have already spoken with other clubs. Something will happen but I am not sure if now or at the end of the season."
