A motorcyclist who died following a crash in Co Antrim on Monday night has been named by police.
Andrew Nesbitt, 55, from the Carrickfergus area, died following a single vehicle road traffic collision on the Shore Road, Jordanstown, at around 11.10pm on July 19.
Police attended the scene, along with the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service, where Mr Nesbitt, the rider of a black Suzuki motorbike, was pronounced dead.
Inspector Murphy said: “At approximately 11.10pm on Monday July 19th, it was reported to police that a black Suzuki motorbike was involved in the incident. Police attended the scene, along with colleagues from Northern Ireland Ambulance Service, where sadly, the male rider of the motorbike was pronounced dead.
“Enquiries are currently continuing into this very tragic incident. I want to take this opportunity to appeal for witnesses to this collision and ask anyone with information or dash cam footage, that could assist our investigation to call us on 101, quoting reference number 2383 19/07/21.
”Alternatively information can also be provided by calling the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
It's understood the crash occurred while the victim was on his way home from work.
East Antrim UUP MLA John Stewart said he was shocked and saddened to hear the tragic news.
"My thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the family and friends of the victim at this very difficult time," he added.
DUP Councillor Mark Cooper said: "I offer my condolences to the family of this man. This latest fatality on our roads is a shock for everyone and very sad news indeed."
Alliance Councillor Tom Campbell also expressed his sadness on behalf of the local community following the tragedy.
“It is shocking that someone has lost their life, under such devastating circumstances. My thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones of the motorcyclist,” Alderman Campbell said.
“This will come as a real shock to our community, who will be rightly saddened by the news of another life lost needlessly on our roads.
“I urge anyone who witnessed the collision, or who may have information, to contact the PSNI on 101.”
The route was shut in both directions between Newtownabbey and Carrickfergus, but reopened just before 6am on Tuesday morning.
Roads and traffic monitoring service Inrix first reported the crash after midnight. Police said the road was likely to remain closed for some time.
