Jordanhill Campus on fire as huge blaze erupts in former university building

Firefighters are tackling a huge blaze at the former Jordanhill College buidling in the west end of Glasgow.

Emergency services are in attendance at the former University of Strathclyde campus site, which is currently being revamped into a £100 million housing development.

The fire broke out at Southbrae Drive at around 4pm this afternoon.

Multiple fire crews are in attendance as plumes of smoke were able to be seen across the city.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: "The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted at 3.57pm on Saturday 8 June to reports of a fire in a derelict building in Glasgow.

"Operation control mobilised four fire engines and the crews were met by a well-developed fire.

"Firefighters currently remain on scene and are working to extinguish the fire."

Strathclyde University left the campus – which was used for teacher training – in 2012 and moved to the John Anderson Campus in the city centre. The site includes the Grade B listed David Stow building.

Local resident Liz Kelman, 50, who was twice a student at the campus, said: "We're all in a bit of shock. My son first alerted me to it and sent me pictures of the smoke.

"I think it's the library building which is on fire. There is a main atrium and the floors are all mezzanined, so the flames could spread quickly.

"The main worry is for the David Stow building. It's due to be turned into flats and there is a connected corridor between the two buildings. The building on fire was actually due to be demolished."

Ex-firefighter and local resident Mark Tungatt agreed with that assessment.

He said: "The main concern will be for the David Stow building. It's listed and was due to be turned into flats.

"There is a corridor that connects it with the building which is on fire, which is due for demolition. It appears to me like it started in the upper two floors."

An onlooker, who lives nearby, said: "We got here about 45 minutes ago. We were playing tennis at Broomhill Tennis courts and saw the smoke so ran over.

"It looks really nasty, hopefully it doesn't spread to other buildings."

It now looks like one side of the building has almost entirely burned away.

An old couple who live nearby said: "We live just up the road and saw the flames and smoke.

"Think it's the modern building to the back - it could be the old theatre and arts department so there might be a lot of combustible material in there."

People have been reacting to news of the fire on social media.

Councillor Michael Cullen tweeted: "Beware large fire in Old Jordanhill college everyone please be careful and ensure our emergency services have access to deal with this ongoing incident!"

Another Twitter user @WaddellCrooks said: "Very sad sight in the West End as historic Jordanhill College burns."

@nosrepat wrote: "From my flat I can see huge #fire at derelict #jordanhill teacher training building. Glasgow fire curse strikes again."

@wee_bubbles said: "So sad to see Jordanhill campus like this."

The burning building was in the process of being redeveloped into more than 400 flats of up to five bedrooms, and costing between £246,500 and £625,000.
