Jordan Willis says Sunderland will take the FA Cup seriously, as they look ahead to Gillingham

Sunderland defender Jordan Willis believes his side have to be at the top of their game if they are to progress to the FA Cup second round this weekend.

The Black Cats will host Gillingham on Saturday and Willis is expecting it to be a tough afternoon for the home side.

But while the league is Sunderland's priority, Willis insists they will be going into the game at the Stadium of Light to win.

"You expect to see hard work, resilience and they are also a team with a lot of quality," he said of Gillingham.

"We've got to make sure we are on our game and come away with the right result."

The 25-year-old also expressed the importance of bouncing back after Tuesday nights disappointing result against Leicester City Under 21s.

Willis came off the bench in that game as Sunderland were beaten by the Foxes' development side, in a humiliating result for the club.

"Losing on Tuesday was not the greatest of evenings," summer signing Willis admitted. "We've got to dust ourselves down and be ready to go again so we can get the right result."

The game against Gillingham kicks off at the unusual time of 1pm on Saturday, because rivals Newcastle United are also at home this weekend against Bournemouth in the Premier League.
