Jordan Urges De-Escalation Amid Regional Tensions

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken returns to Washington, following a week-long trip aimed at calming tensions across the Middle East

US President Joe Biden engaged in a conversation with King Abdullah of Jordan on Sunday, as confirmed by both the White House and the Jordanian court. During the call, Abdullah emphasized the importance of ending the conflict in Gaza promptly to prevent any potential regional spillover.

The discussion also revolved around the necessity of maintaining close coordination between Jordan and the US regarding ongoing regional developments. This comes in the wake of the Jordanian government's appeal for all parties involved to exercise restraint and handle tensions with discipline and responsibility following Iran's recent attack on Israel.

At a cabinet session led by Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh, Jordanian officials stressed the significance of de-escalation and urged all parties to act responsibly while demonstrating utmost self-restraint. The government highlighted the risks associated with regional escalation on international peace and security.

Assuring the public, the government stated that Jordan continues to function normally, with public services, education, and healthcare facilities operating smoothly. Additionally, the government reiterated its support for the Jordanian Armed Forces in safeguarding the nation's security.

Residents in Amman reported witnessing activity in the skies over the capital early Sunday morning, causing panic among the population. The cabinet disclosed that it intercepted foreign objects in Jordanian airspace to protect citizens and residential areas. Fortunately, no significant damage or injuries were reported despite some fragments falling in various locations.

The Civil Aviation Regulatory Commission (CARC) is actively monitoring the situation after temporarily closing Jordanian airspace on Sunday to ensure the safety and security of airspace operations.
