Jordan Pickford on why the Wear-Tyne Derby sets him up nicely as Everton face Liverpool

Former Sunderland goalkeeper Jordan Pickford believes his experiences as a fan taking in the Wear-Tyne derby put him in good stead for the Merseyside derby this week.

Liverpool welcome Pickford's Everton to Anfield on Wednesday night with the sides at contrasting ends of the table - the Reds leading the Premier League, while the Toffees just one place above the drop zone.

The clash is known for it's fiery nature but Pickford believes he can handle the pressure having supported Sunderland through many games against Newcastle United.

"We know the passion for both sides and with me being from up north I know what the passion is like with Sunderland and Newcastle," he told the Daily Mail.

"I think it’s the same down here so I kind of know the feeling, but you’ve got to give credit where credit’s due.

"They are doing really well but it’s hopefully our time to stop them in their tracks."

Pickford has never played in a Wear-Tyne derby, but has taken on United for Everton - infamously allowing the Geordie faithful to wind him up during their 3-2 victory at St James' Park last season.

Everton boss Marco Silva is reportedly on the verge of the sack after losing 2-1 to Leicester City over the weekend - the game against Liverpool may be his final in charge.
