Jordan Pickford jokes over 'touch-and-go' Ben Godfrey moment as Everton defender makes England debut

Jordan Pickford has joked about a heart-in-the-mouth moment involving Everton team-mate Ben Godfrey as the defender was handed his England debut on Wednesday evening.

The Three Lions kicked off their preparations for this summer's European Championships by beating Austria 1-0 at the Riverside Stadium thanks to Bukayo Saka's second half strike.

But Evertonians will have been fully focused on their three players involved in proceedings, with Pickford starting and both Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Godfrey being introduced from the bench after the interval.

The centre-back, who stayed with the camp despite not being named in the squad for this summer's tournament by Gareth Southgate, was given a scare shortly after being introduced for his senior debut.

The Blues man attempted a back-pass to his goalkeeper but didn't get the direction right, forcing Pickford to scramble back towards his goal line and make sure there wasn't an embarrassing own goal.

But England's No.1 was all smiles after the match had finished.

He told Sky Sports: "I was alright because it wasn't too pacey so I didn't have to get a sprint on!

"But yeah, it was a tough-and-go moment but I got there in the end!"

All three Everton stars could be involved once again on Sunday evening as England take on Romania in Middlesbrough, before Calvert-Lewin and Pickford stay with the squad for the start of the Euros later this month.
