Jordan Pickford gets unexpected backing as Everton goalkeeper praised for 'priceless commodity'

Paul Merson has backed Jordan Pickford to remain England's number one goalkeeper despite recent criticism of the Everton man.

Pickford hit out at his critics after a mistake allowed Christian Benteke to score for Crystal Palace at Goodison Park.

But the 25-year-old, who was backed by boss Carlo Ancelotti this week, has to go to the European Championships in the summer, according to former Arsenal midfielder Merson, who hasn't proven to be popular with Everton fans in recent years.

He told the Daily Star: "England fans are already starting to speculate who will be in goal for Gareth Southgate's side at Euro 2020.

"Well, there shouldn't be any debate.

"Jordan Pickford is No. 1 and must be the Three Lions' keeper when the tournament kicks off in June.

"I don't care if Nick Pope and Dean Henderson are having fabulous seasons with their respective clubs.

"And I'm even prepared to overlook the fact that Pickford has dropped a couple of clangers at club level – the most recent when he allowed a tame Christian Benteke shot to beat him at his near post during Everton's 3-1 win against Crystal Palace earlier this month.

"The fact is the kid has never let his country down."

He added: "He's proved himself at the very highest level, performing superbly at the World Cup, saving penalties and handling the pressure like a veteran

"You cannot put a price on experience and Pickford's been there and done it.

"Of course, like everyone else, I don't want to see the England No. 1 lose his form.

"The one thing we know about Pickford is that he's not going to melt on the big stage – and that's a priceless commodity to have in your goalie."
