Jordan Pickford breaks his silence on his nightmare day at St James' Park on England duty

Jordan Pickford admits his performance at Newcastle United wasn’t good enough.

Pickford had a nightmare at St James’ Park on a day when he was accused by pundits of playing up to the crowd because of his Sunderland background. It all played out in front of an ecstatic home crowd who were not shy about reminding him that his performance wasn’t up to scratch.

Pickford’s performance was picked over in the week following but he performed well against Chelsea last weekend and Gareth Southgate confirmed at today’s England press conference that he will play the Everton stopper in Friday’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Czech Republic .

The goalkeeper responded to that at the pre-match press conference by admitting his performance at St James’ Park was not up to scratch. “It is great for me and I feel, apart from the Newcastle game, I have been in good form. In the Newcastle game I made a mistake but I bounced back well against Chelsea and that shows my mentality and the character of myself,” he said.

“I think it’s good that the manager has shown the faith in me to say I’m starting on Friday and I’ve been training well all week so it’s been good.”
