Jordan Peele to produce Candyman sequel, with Nia DaCosta directing

Apiphobes beware, the Candyman is coming back to cinemas.

Little Woods filmmaker Nia DaCosta will direct the “spiritual sequel” to the 1992 slasher, according to Variety, with Get Out’s Jordan Peele executive producing.

As with Get Out, there may be a political tinge to this horror. The sequel will return to the Cabrini-Green public housing development in Chicago’s Near North Side – the setting for the previous film – only now that area has been gentrified.

The Candyman is the son of a slave who was attacked by a lynch mob and stung to death by bees, but later summoned back to life.

“The original was a landmark film for black representation in the horror genre,” Peele commented.

“Alongside Night of the Living Dead, Candyman was a major inspiration for me as a filmmaker — and to have a bold new talent like Nia at the helm of this project is truly exciting.

“We are honored to bring the next chapter in the Candyman canon to life and eager to provide new audiences with an entry point to Clive Barker’s legend,” he added.

Production on the Universal Pictures movie is expected to begin next spring, with a 12 June, 2020 release date on the cards.
