The Jordanian health authorities said on Sunday that all adults who have been fully vaccinated against coronavirus for six months are now eligible for a booster shot.
“The new target group is 18 years and above,” Adel Al Belbeisi, the Health Ministry’s top infectious diseases official told state television.
The official stressed the importance of the third dose, noting that immunity weakens six months after receiving the previous shot.
The health official noted that the ministry sees that the third dose should be of the same vaccine type as the first and second shots. However, if the first and second jabs caused any complications, the booster shot can be changed.
The National Epidemiological Committee on Wednesday recommended giving the third dose of the coronavirus vaccine to those aged 18 and above.
Previously only people above 60 years or those with specific diseases were entitled to a third shot.
At least 892,000 people have been affected by the virus in Jordan, including the 2,500 who were reported as Covid-positive on Sunday. The official death toll reached 11,238.
Official data shows that 3.6 million people in Jordan had received two vaccine doses.
