The devastated father of an American student who was mauled to death by sharks while on holiday, has told how his wife tried desperately to save her.
Jordan Lindsay, 21, from South Carolina, was attacked by three sharks near Rose Island in the Bahamas while snorkelling with her family.
She suffered devastating injuries after being savaged by the sharks, and was later pronounced dead in hospital.
Ms Lindsay’s father Michael said she had been swimming with her mother on another part of the island when the tragic incident occurred.
"My wife was near Jordan, a few feet away, when the shark attacked," he told the ABC News.
"My wife got to Jordan and pulled Jordan to shore by herself.
Officials said the 21-year-old’s arms, legs and buttocks were bitten and her right arm was severed.
In a separate statement, Mr Linsday said his daughter would be remembered as “a great daughter and person“.
“We already miss her so much,” he said.
“She was so caring, she loved all animals. It’s ironic she would die getting attacked by a shark.”
Her family has since started a GoFundMe page, writing that the money would be used to cover funeral costs and expenses related to transporting her body back to California.
The page, which describes the student as “the most beautiful, gentle soul”, raised more than £47,000 ($60,762) in one day.
Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, where Ms Lindsey was studying communications, announced its staff and students were grieving for the "devoted animal lover and climate change advocate".
The Ministry of Tourism and Aviation of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas said in a statement: “On behalf of the Government and the people of The Bahamas expresses its condolences and deepest sympathies to the family and loved ones of the victim of Wednesday's shark attack off Rose Island, near New Providence."
