Jordan Jones 'set' for Rangers exit as frozen out winger closes in on Wigan loan move

Jordan Jones is close to leaving Rangers on loan - with Wigan Athletic in the frame to bring him back to England's League One.

The winger has been out of favour under Steven Gerrard ever since he was suspended for breaching Covid rules last season and spent the second half of the campaign on loan at Sunderland.

The ex-Kilmarnock man enjoyed something of a resurgence down south and notched three goals and four assists in 21 games.

But he couldn't fire them to promotion as the Black Cats collapsed towards the end of the campaign and opted not to sign him permanently.

Blackpool and Ipswich have been among the clubs keen to bring him back south of the border but it's now claimed Wigan are the firm favourites.

The Guardian's Will Unwin reckons the Latics will sign him on loan from Rangers - likely until the end of the season.

It seems unlikely Gerrard will stand in the way of the move as he finds himself well stocked in attacking midfield.

Ryan Kent and Ianis Hagi will expect to be playing most weeks while Kemar Roofe and Joe Aribo are versatile wide options.

And then there's Scott Wright who has been tipped for big things this season and got off the mark in their 3-0 win over Livingston at the weekend.

Jones hasn't played for Rangers since October last year and, now 26, it appears his long-term future is very much in doubt.
