Jordan Jones' 'point to prove' as Rangers loanee receives rave boss review for dragging Sunderland off the canvas

Jordan Jones scored his first Sunderland goal as the Rangers loanee sparked a sensational late revival with a stunning strike against Crewe Alexandra.

With his side trailing 2-0, Jones climbed off the bench on the hour mark and his top-corner finish with 14 minutes left had his team believing.

But it wasn't until the seventh minute of injury time that Chris Maguire's half-volley found the net to level the score.

And the Northern Ireland cap said after the match that he's always got a point to prove with fans now clamouring for him to start games.

Jones has previously insisted he's out to impress Steven Gerrard back in Glasgow as well as Black Cats boss Lee Johnson and he said: "I've come here desperate to play football, I'm desperate to play for the club and desperate to help the club get promoted.

"Any time I come on the pitch I'm trying to prove a point.

"Hopefully today I've proved one, and hopefully I can now get a run of games.

"I've come to the club with a lack of match fitness but I think you can see that's coming back.

"But it's not about me, it's about the team and achieving the end goal which is promotion.

Johnson displayed his gratitude towards the two goalscorers for dragging his team out of the gutter to rescue a point.

And he remarked Jones' goal should be a goal of the season contender as he said: "Unbelievable strikes, top top strikes.

"Unless you produce those moments of magic in a game like that, you can't lift it.

"I'm very grateful to the two players that have produced such unbelievable technique and I'd have thought both of them will be on the goals of the season shortlist.

"We needed something like that because it wasn't good enough today."
