Jordan Jones picked Sunderland over Championship clubs as Rangers winger reveals why he chose Black Cats

Jordan Jones has revealed he turned down a number of Championship clubs to join Sunderland on loan for the rest of the season.

The winger signed on at the League One outfit until the summer after being allowed to leave Rangers on loan.

He's struggled for game time this season with injuries and a Covid-19 breach and Steven Gerrard was willing to let him head out and get some game time.

And Jones admits he spoke to a number of clubs about moving but only had one place he wanted to go as soon as Sunderland came in for him.

He said: "There was a lot of speculation. It was well documented I was going to leave Rangers on loan this window.

"I spoke to a few clubs in the Championship, a few clubs in League One then Sunderland came in this week.

"I had a zoom call with the manager for about an hour and called my agent after that and said ‘look this is the only move for me, let’s get this done as quick as we can’.

"And 48 hours later I’m sat here so I’m over the moon."

The Northern Ireland international explained that he was delighted with what Lee Johnson had to say about his plans for Sunderland.

And he also admitted moving home was a big part as well as the fan base at the Stadium of Light.

He added: "That was a massive thing that swayed me.

"I was 100 per cent in coming after speaking to the manager but again, a club with such a big fan base and such passion and I know it might be cliche but I think the club is a sleeping giant.

"After speaking to the manager and hearing his vision for the future it was a no brainer to come and the fans were a massive bonus."
